Occupation Middle Management Yes-man
Experience Started racing MTB in College ('96) as sport class racer. My brush with greatness there was getting lapped by Dave Weins at the Howell Mountain Challenge. Then I moved to the East coast for a few years, and gained a 25 pound beer gut, which still makes an appearance every winter as my vaunted secret downhill weapon: the “aero belly.” Returned to Sport Class Racing in 2000, and got first road bike to help me race on the Dirt. Started as Cat 4, moved to Cat 3 after finishing second at Berkeley Hills. Been pretty much bogged down as Cat 3 ever since, but moved up to Expert MTB in 2001 after winning ... The Howell Mountain Challenge. Now pretty much my main season goal is to be in good enough shape to do the long winter rides with the crew.
Favorite race(s) Top three road: Berkeley Hills, Copperopolis, and San Ardo. For MTB, the races are dying out, but there are still a few excellent single lap and point to point races (the silly multiple loop races suck): The Lemurian (30 miles in the Trinity Alps), Downieville (28 mile point-to-point with over 4,000 feet of descending in the Sierra Butes), and ... The Napa Valley Classic (held same place as Howell Mountain, but as single 22 mile loop). For Cross, the courses at the Watsonville Fairgrounds never disappoint, especially in heavy rains when portions of the course are under a foot of standing water.
Pre-ride beverage Coffee. Royal Decaf, small ... In a medium cup.
Pre/post-ride hangout Royal. My couch watching English Premier League on Teevee and dozing off with egg on toast goo all over my face.
Overindulgent meal This five star place in Cabo called “La Frieda” -- $300 for dinner for two in Mexico buys tastes to remember for a lifetime. Can't wait to go back.
Retirement/current bike Road: Cyfac XLR8R with old school 9-speed Dura Ace, Ritchey race wheels. MTB: Dual-sus Rocky Mountain Element, Manitou Scareb fork, avid mechanical disc brakes, mavic crossmax tubeless wheels, and XTR. Cross: a carbon fiber ALAN with full Dura Ace and Ritchey WCS 'CX cranks I bought via craigslist.
